Louisa Cheves Stoney papers, 1811-1939.

Papers consist of family correspondence, writings, records of the Second Presbyterian Church (Charleston, S.C.), and other items. Correspondence (1872-1939) of Louisa C. Stoney, her husband Samuel G. Stoney, and other family members and friends concerns family matters, travels, politics, business affairs, the Charleston (S.C.) earthquake of 1886, and other matters. Writings (1915-1939) mainly consist of Stoney's poems, but also include essays, a speech, and school exercises of Augustine Thomas Smythe, Jr. In addition, there is correspondence (1920-1936) concerning Stoney's poetry. Other items include recipes, pencil drawings, and a card with a miniature painting of a bird overlaid with feathers. Records of Second Presbyterian Church and papers pertaining to it (1811-1938) collected by Thomas Smyth and Louisa C. Stoney include subscribers account books (1877-1892); missionary reports; minutes (1876-1898) of the Missionary Society meetings; treasurer's reports (1903-1920) of the Ladies' Educational Society; annotated copies of the church manual (1838, 1854); correspondence; sermons; a membership list (1876); minutes (1870's) of annual meetings; memorials of church leaders; statistical reports (1811-1861); a temperance pledge list; photographs of the church; and other items. Related material includes a history of the Zion Presbyterian Church (n.d.); and a dues book (1893) of the Thornwell Orphanage Society. In addition, there are notes (ca. 1914-1925) by Louisa C. Stoney concerning Second Presbyterian Church, women in the church, and the church manual, as well as correspondence regarding the autobiography of Thomas Smyth, which Stoney edited.
